As a regulatory requirement, to maintain your Classification Level you are required to complete 30 hours of professional development every three years from the date your initial classification was granted.
Learning opportunities should enhance your skills and knowledge that reflect your plan for working with and on behalf of young children and their families; and
Learning opportunities should be related to professional work in one of the general areas of child development, family support, programming, guiding behavior, health, safety, nutrition, inclusion, communication, administration.
Six weeks prior to the date that professional development is due:
- Complete a Record of Professional Development form
- Document the names and dates of the in-service training, including workshops, seminars, conferences you have completed in the past three years.
- Sign your form.
- Submit to Classification Services by emailing the form to classification@novascotia.ca
- If all required information has been submitted, we will send a letter to you by email identifying the new professional development due date.
- If we need more information, we will contact you.
- Share a copy of the letter with your childcare facility or family home day care agency, who must ensure that licensing requirements are met by each employee.

If you are unable to complete the hours on time:
- Submit the Record of Professional Development form with a record of the hours that have been completed, and
- Submit a letter that includes a plan to complete the required number of hours and identify a date for completion.
We will acknowledge receipt of your plan via email. Share a copy of this acknowledgment with your employer for licensing purposes.
Upon completion of the required hours, submit the Record of Professional Development form with a full record of the required professional development hours.
