Families in Nova Scotia are paying significantly less for regulated child care than they did in 2021.
Through phased fee reductions implemented under the Canada‑Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, average child care fees were reduced by approximately 50 per cent for families with children under the age of 6.
These reductions, paid directly to child care providers, are applied directly to child care bills, helping to ease costs for parents and guardians across the province.

I’m new to child care. What help is available with costs?
Child care in Nova Scotia costs much less than it did a few years ago. Most families with children under age 6 pay about half as much as families did in 2021. This lower cost is already built into fees at participating child care providers.
Do I need to apply to get lower child care fees?
No. If your child is enrolled with a participating licensed provider, the lower fee is automatic. There’s nothing you need to fill out or sign to get it.
How will I see the lower fee?
It’s already included in your bill. Some providers show it as a line item; others include it in the total.
Which providers offer lower fees?
Most licensed child care centres and regulated family home child care providers take part. These providers receive funding so they can charge families less.
What if child care is still too expensive for my family?
You may be able to get extra help through the Child Care Subsidy. The subsidy is for lower‑income families and can cover part or all your child care costs, on top of the lower fees already in place.
Can I get both the lower fees and the Child Care Subsidy?
Yes. Many families receive both. The fee reduction applies first, and the subsidy can lower your costs even more.
Do I still get to choose my child care provider?
Yes. You always have a choice in who provides care for your child. Some providers offer lower fees, and some do not. What matters most—location, hours, or cost—is up to your family.
